With Valentine's Day coming up, chocolate is everywhere, in every shape, form, and color.
Most chocolates for sale are full of sugar and UN-fair trade chocolate, but here is a delicious and (more) healthy alternative.  I made these truffles with some of my students on Sunday, and even the 10 year olds were impressed. Who needs sugar and cream when you have nuts and love?

Cacao Truffles
¾ cup cacao powder
2 cups ground almonds
1/2 cup honey
 or agave syrup
1 Tbs. coconut oil
Pinch of sea salt
①Combine all the ingredients except for the coconut flakes in a large bowl and mix
    thoroughly.
②Take a small amount of the mixture, and roll small balls between your palms. Add your
     love!
③Dip each ball in a separate smaller bowl containing the coconut flakes.
④Freeze overnight to harden the truffles.

Let's talk about Yin Yoga

In last week's class, we focused on yin poses. In fact, I don't think we did one standing pose! That is unusual for my class, but it seemed to suit the students very well. One of my students left the class saying, "My fatigue is gone!"

Yin and Yang are the opposing forces that can be seen in all things. Light is yin while darkness is yang; cold is yin while hot is yang; sadness is yin while happiness is yang, and so on and so on. In yoga too there are yin and yang poses. The winter is considered the most yin time a year, when everything slows down. So, it may be a good time of year to try some yin yoga poses.

Yang poses:
*  stretch and strengthen the muscles.
*  create heat by increasing blood flow.
*  are held for a few breaths to a minute.

Yin poses:
*   stretch connective tissue of the joints and bones.
*  relax and calm the body and mind.
*  are held for 3 to 5 minutes.

Although yin yoga is not as intense as other yang forms of yoga, its long duration can be difficult to
maintain. It is challenging, but at the same time more relaxing that active yoga. It is recommended for
people who have stiff joints, or if you are feeling too tired to do more active yoga. It provides a good
balance to an active and busy (read: stressful) lifestyle.

Yin yoga poses can benefit many people for the following reasons:
•      Feel calm and balanced
•      Improved strength
•      Stress levels lowered
•      Greater stamina
•      Greater flexibility of the body’s connective tissues and joints
•      Deeper relaxation

Winter Yoga Routine

Happy New Year Yogis!!

The uncovered potential of a new year ~ what kind of year will 2013 be?
What do you want to focus on, change, or start this year?

My list of resolutions is long, but I will start with this one,
“To dedicate more time to my practice and study of yoga”,
and share what I learn with my students and friends!

This also includes more activity on my blog,
so please take a look regularly for information about yoga poses,
food, events, and other fun stuff!

Winter Yoga Practice

In the winter, our body has different needs than in other seasons.
We may not have as much energy as we usually do, we may find it harder to get out of bed in the morning etc. For these reasons, it’s a great idea to do yoga or other exercise to wake your body up.
If you are feeling sluggish (怠い),  some warming “yang” (陽) yoga poses may be just what you need.
It’s also important to do calming, seated, slow “yin”(陰)poses  to give your body the rest it needs.

You can decide what works for you, but it feel more natural to do “yin” poses in the morning
and “yang” poses in the afternoon or evening, during this time of year.

The following whole routine should take about 60 to 70 minutes,
but feel free to only do a few of the poses if you don’t have time.

※To be clear, many yoga poses can be either yin or yang, depending on how fast you do them。

Laughter Yoga ラフターヨガ!in Nagoya

There is no better way to start the year off than with laughter!
For those of you who haven't tried it, laughter yoga is a fun way to get your heart rate up and relieve stress.  Recent research from the US has shown that laughter, real belly laughter, affects your body in the same way as an aerobic workout.
Check out the October article from the New York Times:
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/24/laughter-as-a-form-of-exercise/

Anyway, if you are around Nagoya on January 3rd, 3~4:30pm, come to Shonan Shyz Yoga Studio for some serious laughter to ring in the New Year. I will be there!

Yoga Workshop by the Sea

Sunday, April 29th, I spent the morning on the sea in Gamagori, Aichi, practicing yoga with my teacher's training instructor, Okada Sensei. As always, it was a great pleasure to bathe in his presence, and learn some helpful tips regarding yoga practice and teaching. We discussed being aware of our bones, of the joints in particular, and how this awareness can make our practice better. Imagining your bones in their sockets can help us open up wider and grow longer.

Our potential is greater than we realize, but only as great as we can imagine. We are capable of doing most things, as long as we can imagine and then follow up the thought with the steady, continued work.

Okada Sensei also demonstrated his feats of balance and flexibility, standing on one leg, while bringing the other leg up to his head - a complete, upright standing split! But even he started somewhere. So I will keep working at my yoga practice.
My current challenge pose:
the scorpion, Vrischikasana.

He also taught us this cool pose, the Twisted Pigeon.

Charity Yoga Lesson

Arigato. Thank you. Namaste. Nearly all yoga classes end with a word and usually a bow of appreciation. We are showing our appreciation to the teacher, for sharing her wisdom, but also to the longer practice of yoga, to our bodies for being able to practice yoga, and to all the forces that allow us to be healthy and happy, at that moment. The longer I practice yoga, the more grateful I feel towards yoga and all people and things in this world that keep me happy, healthy, and safe. For this reason, I truly believe the world would be a more peaceful place if all people practiced yoga. It just helps you realize what is important.

The people who experienced the earthquake-tsunami disaster first hand are surely grateful that their lives were spared. Because of their spirit, they can try to move forward and rebuild. But one year later, most survivors still struggle, hardly able to return to their previous lives. They continue to need OUR support, in the form of positive thoughts and actions, however small they may be.

I welcome you to Viaura’s Charity Yoga Class on Thursday, March 29 from 1pm to 2pm, to come and do some small positive action. The class theme will be “awakening”- stimulating the organs and the senses in preparation for spring. I look forward to practicing with you!
Location: Viaura Yoga Studio in Sakae

All are welcome to join this class. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross for the people of Tohoku. Give anything you like, but a minimum donation of 500 yen is requested.
